PREFACE

The concept of this guide for entrepreneurs and project managers orig- inated with Kevin Torf, managing partner at T2 Group in Los Angeles, California, whose forty-plus-year career in information technology design and management informed many of the project management tips it offers.

We present these tips via a brief, letter-by-letter framework — P.R.O.J.E.C.T.S. Each letter in this acronym represents one of the building blocks of project management: planning, reflection, organization, jug- gling, empowerment, communication, teamwork, and standards. Each of these blocks encompasses a critical area that every stakeholder, team leader, and team member confronts on a daily basis throughout their working life.

In the pages that follow, we break these blocks down one at a time. For each, we start by giving a quick preview of the block. We then turn to the tips — short, bite-sized pieces of advice that allow you and your team to make the most of each. Finally, we conclude each discussion with a case study from T2’s client files. These studies show how we successfully lever- aged a block during an actual project, leading to a cost-effective win for our client.

Here, a disclaimer and final acknowledgment is in order. These wins were the result of more than following a successful framework. Credit for them — and all that we do — ultimately belongs to T2’s employees. Their passion cannot be put to paper, and there is no collection of tips, no matter how large, that can capture all the ways they have worked together to suc- ceed. Nonetheless, we are confident that these tips have helped refine and support their work — and that teams who put them into practice will soon have new wins of their own.
